comment Login problem (the login screen shows again)
This was my problem--although it wasn't a missing file, I think it might have been a function definition (which worked when I would load it via . .profile, not sure why it broke things at startup).

comment What additional software should I install for a Macbook?
@somehume If memory serves, I meant "more sensitive". Without this configuration, the MacBook touch pad required lots of pressure before it would respond.

comment What's difference of apt-get and aptitude?
Also worth noting that apt-get often falls on its face for simple operations, and it has no ability to handle dependency mismatches or broken packages (although it claims that broken packages can be fixed with apt-get install -f, I've literally never seen that work in my entire life). For some reason, I use apt-get by default, but when it encounters problems, I usually end up resolving them with aptitude, which never seems to encounter apt-get's numerous problems.

comment How to mount HFS+ drive and ignore permissions
@Catskul No I can't. This question is over 2 years old--in that time, I've sold my MacBook and reproducing this issue for the purpose of validating your answer is prohibitively difficult.

comment Custom keyboard shortcuts in gedit
@MadMike Unfortunately, I use gedit for reading more than writing. Usually I have some word file open in it. Regardless, page up/down keys aren't even in standard locations, and they're almost never on the same keyblock as your hands. If you have to move your hand to hit the page up/down keys, you may as well just move it a little further to the mouse.
