Retired, play golf 3 days a week and spend most of my spare time at home on my laptop running 12:10. Moved to Ubuntu in 2009 having tried for some years before that only to have been frustrated by the Broadcom WiFi issue. I run 2 web sites for my golf club and Village where I live. I'm also the "computer guru" for friends, relatives and local villagers and am slowly weaning some of these off Windows to Ubuntu. I'm a great believer in the Linux project and enjoy the intellectual challenge these computer issues bring. I'm not a programmer but do dabble a bit with the Terminal. The Linux community is a great resource which brings people of all countries together to help one another. I'm no expert but by dabbling and helping others I have increased my experience and if that experience can help others then that is a testament to those who have helped me.

comment Installing on windows 8
Re previous answer - I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and the key to press when the Dell Logo appears at boot up is F12. You should see various boot options - top will be HDD - Boot from DVD should be further down the list. Click on that.

Hi Chris, I mended the laptop last July so that must have been the BIOS I used. The owner has the laptop back and its been working fine ever since.

comment Wifi signal drops out at random (apparently) moments
Thanks, according to the router it has an automatic channel selector supposedly going to the strongest signal. After I was able to get back onto the router yesterday the channel was number 6 (of 11) and when "refreshed" it is supposed to choose 1, 6 or 11. I refreshed and it went to 11. I'll keep a look out for the next few days.

Thank you for that. I don't recall having this on any previous version although I've not had any other "user" including "guest" before. Thanks once again.

comment My laptop randomly restarts, O.S or hardware?
Whoops done it again - I'll learn not to hit the Enter button to get a new line. I had to backup and copy my Home Directory, then create a new small partition to install an old version of Windows. Copy the new BIOS file to Windows and double-click it and follow instructions. I then removed the Windows partition and carried on as before. I've had no overheating or shutting down problems now for over 3 months whereas previously it happened many times each day.
