comment 14.04 boot failure on installation from USB
You indicated what happens when you start "without" the USB drive, what you want to do is boot onto that USB drive and run through the installation right? Have you made the USB drive bootable? Have you configured the BIOS to boot off the USB? Full instructions here: help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

comment Net activity - What does this network activity mean
That first column in the output indicates the process name. For example, on my system I see a port firefox has open: firefox 2147 allusers 139u IPv4 269292 0t0 TCP 10.0.2.15:58793->nuq05s01-in-f31.1e100.net:https (ESTABLISHED)

revised Net activity - What does this network activity mean
Changed the title away from "being hacked" to a more specific and productive question, also formatted the text in a code block for readability

comment Net activity - What does this network activity mean
Not sure why everyone's down voting the question, seems perfectly reasonable to ask what certain network activity means. I've proposed a few minor edits to eliminate the buzzword "being hacked", you just want to understand what you're seeing from netstat.

comment Upgraded old computer. Unique grub rescue problem
It'll be easier to answer if you give us a screen shot or copy/paste what you're seeing, also making your question shorter will help. Try checking that the disk hasn't failed, bad disk is first on my list of concerns, this article describes the techniques: cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-find-out-if-harddisk-failing.html
