It's still not true in 16.04: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/803682/Ubuntu%20Software_002.png. Two non free, close source programs in the software center.

If you are planning to run a full-featured browser in the client no. You will need some kind of GUI, Lubuntu is the lighter Ubuntu version with GUI included that I know.

comment How to Handle BTsync GUI in Ubuntu 14.04 with Small Displays?
I don't know if this will work on OS/X, but you can move windows in Ubuntu by pressing ALT and moving the mouse (the cursor must be over the windows to be moved). If this shortcut doesn't conflict with some OS/X one, you should be able to move the browser window and access all of it.

comment how to prevent people from using ssh from a machine, but allow ssh in
You can block outgoing connections to port 22, either locally using ip tables, or better blocking then in the firewall/gateway if possible.

comment pip install --user means users cannot run application from Dash or terminal
That's easy to solve. Just use the complete path (relative to ~) in the .desktop file.

comment pip install --user means users cannot run application from Dash or terminal
I have plenty of .desktop files in ~/.local/share (Chrome, Pycharm, and others) and all of then show in dash. Could it be a problem with your file?.

comment Which are the security problems on running an http server using Python's built in module?
AS much as I can see, as long as you avoid the -cgi flag you are safe about code execution, but note that anyone will be able to read any file that the user running the program can read.
