Perhaps you do, but I only seem to have a choice between MTP and PTP. There doesn't seem to be an option for USB Storage. Android 4.1.1

comment DHCP not working on new install
Please pastebin the output of ifconfig as well, this will tell us which IP addresses your NIC has been assigned (or gave itself), perhaps I was wrong about not receiving any responses.

It appears from that output that you aren't getting any replies to any of the packets that you're sending out. Tres strange. At this point, I would scour the logs (any, all) to look for anything related to eth0 or failure to detect network card, or anything that looks like an error or warning at all. And for sanity's sake, double check with a different network cable, it could be a dead cable.

comment How to diagnose Ubuntu CPU spikes / IO wait?
Hm, I certainly will look into interrupt storms, but the problem has continued to occur even after I've stopped using usb devices on this system so regularly. Much of the time I'll be programming on the way to work (transit) and that's when I'll notice it.
