comment Why we still cannot edit .xlsx? Or we can and I am using the wrong tool?
BTW: There are some hits on String properties from /xl/sharedStrings.xml part using Google - it doesn't seem to be a problem specific to LO Calc (or LO in general). So, it's off-topic at askubuntu. You may pose the question at superuser

Which LO version? I've just tested both creating a new xslx file using LO calc (win: 4.4.3.2; linux: 4.2.8.2) or editing an xslt created by excel - both work perfectly fine. So i suppose it's a problem with your file created by excel. Test with a fresh file created by excel or by LO Calc to narrow down the problem.

Are you sure LO Writer is the right tool for this task? To me, it looks like a DTP task; a text processor may not the best choose for this. Maybe you should explain your goal in a more generic manner. Maybe, even LO Calc could fit your needs better.

In additio nto @david6's essential questions: from which device do you try to open the files? Network share, local hdd, local ssd, usb stick, anything else? Are the files working on different systems? Didd you run fsck as the kernel message at 22:25:55 says?

comment Libreoffice calc date format problem
Where's exacty the bug - which behaviour do you expect exactly? As far as i see, the only point is adding AM/PM. I can't reproduce a problem concerning leading zeros - this works fine for me with MM for months, for example.

I'll do my best (maybe tomorrow, here's already near midnight...) - btw, regarding the comments - i can only delete my own comments, you should remove your ones if they aren't required any more to understand question and answer.

For full logfile, use something like tinyupload.com and add a link to the uploaded log. Regarding R: see cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/README and askubuntu.com/questions/506560/how-to-install-package-of-r

Again, just guessing: rjava isn't available. Try sudo apt-get install r-cran-rjava and restart Calc afterwards.

Is R installed? Did you tell the Calc installer to use /usr/lib/R as R installation directory? Maybe again the full log may provide useful information...

After installing chromium, just open the following URL in chromium: localhost:8081/calc - you don't need to uninstall firefox. If it doesn't work, check the calc log (see my answer, i've edited it).

Please check if JavaScript is enabled in your browser. With JavaScript disabled, the first page of Calc displays about 11 buttons without functionality and some horizontal lines. Alternatively, try to access Calc using Google Chrome or Chromium. I assume it isn't a server-side issue any more, but a browser issue.

comment LibreOffice writer: Adding bookmarks
According to the documentation, it should work by inserting index marks: Menu Insert -> Indexes and tables -> Index entry (make sure to select Table of Contents as index type). This way, the index entries will appear in a ToC created inside LO Writer, but not as PDF bookmarks. Maybe this is due to a bug that's more than one year old... :-(

You're very welcome - it's great to have different approaches to solve the issue, and your solution makes perfect use of the full power of LO Writer's formating capabilities.

comment How to install Open Office alongside Libre Office?
@DeanHowell: You're right - but as far as i see, none of the LibreOffice desktop entries are using the /usr/bin/soffice symlink. The all call libreoffice directly. So i assume LibreOffice will still work as usual even if the symlink to /usr/bin/soffice is "captured" by AOO.
