Here on Stack Exchange, I exchange bits and pieces of wisdom on diverse topics, and I've tasted quite a few things. My specialties are software design and OS & network administration, but can also comment on topics as diverse as category theory, linguistics, and aircraft design.

comment How do I get a live-USB to use a partition for persistence?
Why not install to the USB stick the regular way? Run a live CD and set that as your root partition. (More hassle than a live-CD setup, to be sure, but easy enough.)

comment What are some of the issues with CCSM and why would I want to avoid it?
I agree. The unity plugin is too picky about what else works in ccsm. Ubuntu is feeling more like a Mac all the time...

comment How to move keys to “Login” in seahorse?
I don't think there is an easy way built in to Seahorse for moving passwords between different keyrings--_You have to recreate them manually.

comment How can I remove the Trash icon from the Unity launcher?
My personal experience (on Windows, as well as Ubuntu) is that if something isn't there that the documentation "trusts" is there, then I remember that the reason is that I removed it, and there is no problem. I'd like to remove the trash icon, perhaps even with a strong warning.

comment Problem with window manager?
Oh, okay. Well, the missing (transparent) icon probably means that the icon for the terminal can't be found. As for the commands, there is some program missing (or it seems), but nautilus is my usual culprit. Can't think of others.

Well, from Ubuntu in a terminal, you could use shred -n 50 /dev/sdb for instance. But I would do that out of paranoia more than anything else.

comment Removing popularity-contest without trashing the system?
In fact, the packages that ubuntu-standard, ubuntu-desktop and other metapackages depend on are often marked as manually installed, so that apt-get won't say, "the following packages are no longer needed..." every time you use it.

comment New upstream version of gnome-mplayer. How do I ask for this to be considered for release / commit?
Development pre-releases have a less strict policy, but I assume you want the stability of the released version.

comment Bootable Flash Drive
If Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't have startup-disk-creator installed, and if you can't find and install it using Synaptic, then there must be some other program that provides the same function as startup-disk-creator. I have used it in 10.04.

You might even want to shred the whole disk of whatever it has... who knows?

comment Is this really the only way to simply put a link to a web page on my desktop?
That doesn't work for me, but I also don't have Gnome--I'm using Unity.

comment Removing OS from Dual Boot computer, and recovering HD space.
It is simple to do via GParted, as long as you understand what you are doing--I assume you do. But if removing the Mint partition disturbs your bootloader, you'll have to reinstall it, etc before you can boot.

comment cant access ccsm or terminal
You may be able to open ccsm by loging in to a virtual terminal and typing the command "DISPLAY=':0.0' ccsm" and then switching back to the GUI with Ctl+Alt+F7.

Isn't Ctl+Alt+F1 dedicated to "Switch to virtual terminal #1"? Did that work before installing Atlantis?
