comment Can I dd if=/dev/sda to of=/dev/sdc3 (drive to partition)
I have used Ctr + Alt + F1 and then ran the sudo e2fsck -c /dev/sdc1 to check and list my badblocks but the problem still persists.

It seems there is device mapping error because when my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04LTS is started, there are some device errors that I am receiving apart from networking issues. The installed ubuntu couldn't identify any networking connections or devices. Is there any way I can resolve the badblocks in device mapping sector?

I couldn't backup my data on my hard drive and had to re-install Ubuntu from a live USB installer (that I created earlier). But even after re-install, during bootloading, there is a screen as in askubuntu.com/questions/141606/…

When I ran the dd command, it ran for 4 to 5 hours and then ended with an I/O error as given in askubuntu.com/questions/253117/…

But that's one of the 2 formats that are allowed when disk formatting. You can either choose Win_exFAT or NTFS.

@Danatela: Yes as I mentioned in a comment below, I checked the sizes: Source Drive (to be backup-ed) is 250 GB with file system 241 GB; Destination Partition (from an 1 TB external hard drive) is 244 GB. The size of source drive is bigger than destination partition but source file system is less than the partition. Will it be still a problem?

I am trying to take a backup of my hard drive to a partition of an external hard drive. My hard drive is 250 GB with file system 241 GB whereas the partition of my external drive is 244 GB

comment Ubuntu 10.04LTS (Lucid Lynx) - Hard Disk Back Up
@qertvdijk: I need to copy the disk /dev/sda to a partition /dev/sdc3 on external disk. Will it still overwrite the entire disk? If so, is there any way to copy a drive to a partition?

comment Ubuntu 10.04LTS (Lucid Lynx) - Hard Disk Back Up
I copied the ubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso using Universal USB installer from Windows. It's in W95 FAT32 format. When I am running fdisk /dev/sdc1 (got the device# from fdisk -l), there is a warning: DOS-compatible mode is deprecated. Any idea of how to remove the dos-compatibility and will I run into some problem while trying to boot from this device?

@qertvdijk: also, since I have some bad sectors in my hard disk remapped, do you think it will be a wise idea to do disk imaging over file back up? I mean if it is a bit-by-byte copy, it can corrupt my back up, isn't?

@qertvdijk: I don't have a live CD but tried booting from USB drive (used Universal USB installer and source: ubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso). But I am not being able to change the boot order using grub which is built-in in 10.04
