I am having the same issue with a 8800GTS 320 card. I had no issues until recently. There must be some update that broke something, but I have found no work around presently. Wasted three days so far trying to find a solution.

With Fedora 20 I can use the brightness keys on the laptop and then on reboot the computer starts at the previous brightness. I suspect that this would not work in that manner.
