comment How do I cherry pick packages from a PPA?
I disagree, this is pretty straight forward for what someone likes wants. And nice to have all the instructions on identifying the ppa's Pin name.

comment How can I remove duplicate second Unity Launcher on a Dual Screen setup?
Additional note, the above settings in gconf are only for the full Unity interface. If you are using Unity2d you can find them in dconf under com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/only-one-launcher

comment How can I install Adobe AIR?
Dug a little deeper than nora and found the answer regarding the "cannot open display" issue. Problem is you can't have the root user connect to the X display in Ubuntu (with default settings), but we need to run our installer as root (fail-design). First install sux (switchuser with X credentials). Allow the root user to connect to X display. Get current display settings. Then use sux to switch to root user. Run installer with display settings. 1. sudo apt-get install sux 2. /usr/bin/xhost + 3. echo $DISPLAY (use this in step 5) 4. sudo sux - 5. DISPLAY=:0.0 ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin

comment Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, SSL, IRC: Unable to build with OpenSSL
I had actually successfully followed the marvelserv instructions previously and had a totally working version install and running. Quite a few months later I am now unable to connect with clients to the server (failing SSL handshake). I figured it might have been from a libssl-dev upgrade somewhere along the line. Tried to rebuild the package same as you, now none of the libssl algorithms are being detected either... really hope someone finds out what this is from.

comment Where can I find a Subversion 1.7 binary?
They are likely just fine, this is a typical warning you find from intelligent guys that don't really work on a project but are providing builds for everyone. If you don't believe his are ready it seems the subversion teem does have a ppa as well, look at Waylon Flinn's response.

Not that I don't trust Dominik Stadler's repo (even though he seems to build more frequently) but I typically prefer builds from the devs. Also the rabbitvcs note is likely important to many of those who use it.

I noticed this feature is available in ccsm now, under Experimental tab called "Launcher Monitors" in a dropdown. You can choose "All Monitors" or "Primary Desktop"

comment Where are my tray icons in the Unity 2D panel?
Guess it just hasn't been pushed to the update repos yet...even though it's been 2 months. Using that daily ppa works though. Probably best to go ahead and use that repo since it seems unity-2d does have so many weird qwerks and bugs. Hoping it's not incredibly unstable, since that is usually what the -daily postfix means.

comment How to know the name of the systray applications in order to add it one by one on the systray-whitelist?
The biggest problem is guessing as to the capitalization of the application name. It really would be nice to just know what name to look for, either from the application developer/source or some command to search the indicators being hidden. What special localized string is Unity reading to determine whether an app is allowed in the systray or not?

Actually it's the same even in normal Unity...this doesn't seem to list the applications attempting to run in the tray at all.

This doesn't seem to work in Unity2D. Which is unfortunately a giant problem because you can't us the 'all' setting in the systray-whitelist.

comment How can I install Sun/Oracle's proprietary Java JDK 6/7/8 or JRE?
Works great, except the final command issues an error (though everything else works, even in Firefox/Chrome). This seems to be from the default OpenJDK6 install with Oneiric."update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for -javaplugin.so." In the hidden .java.1.6.0.jinfo file there seems to be an alternative pointing to -javaplugin.so. Are we supposed to make a 3rd alternative point to libnpjp2.so with it perhaps?
