I'm Danish and I study computer science. I primarily develop for POSIX systems. I think Rust is appealing.

comment closing laptop lid does not shut all applications down
you when the laptop lid is closed you want: 1. all processes killed, 2. music player started. or do you want 1. xlock started 2. music player started, or do you want 1. all x applications killed 2. xlock started 3. music player started. you need to be more clear about what exactly you need!

comment Gnome uses qt for rendering
eclipse uses SWT which is pretty dependent on the underlying user library. Even though SWT has Motif support, I don't think you can use it, and it wouldn't gain you much since Motif isn't Qt either.

comment How do I mount my ntfs hard drive partition?
@Kyle: you can try viewing it from the root user. if that works, you can try mounting with a different umask to allow non-owners to access the directory too

but where do you type the text? on stdin? then you can replace "cat /proc/cpuinfo" with just "cat". in that case, you need to end your message with a new line and then press control-d.

the processor information you see is content from /proc/cpuinfo. if you want other content in your log file, just change the path. if you want to determine what to write from the STDOUT from another script, you can for example replace "cat /proc/cpuinfo" with "./myscript.sh" and the output of that script will go to your log file

the file will be created in the working directory of the script. if you want another directory, just prepend it as usual. i.e. you can replace "file" ... with "/tmp/file" ... and it is always going to be saved in /tmp
