Thanks! After purging winbind I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a again and it completed successfully. I was then able to boot into Ubuntu normally.

Bluetooth is still dead, but I've read some bug reports suggesting bluez may be broken in Natty. I'll post that in another question if I can't get it working tonight.

@Oli: yes, removable storage device has the highest boot priority in the BIOS. I'll look at the log and list the available packages, but won't be able to do it several hours.
