comment How to simulate closing the lid?
When the system is hibernated, software is not running anymore. So neither will your Bash script, probably.

While this link may answer the question, it is better to include the essential parts of the answer here and provide the link for reference. Link-only answers can become invalid if the linked page changes.

@UriHerrera That goes for any other method (with, sometimes, the exception of dd).

comment Dual booting Ubuntu 12.04: UEFI and Legacy
There are systems (including mine) which won't boot Ubuntu unless UEFI is set to legacy mode, not even with Secure Boot disabled.

@Takkat To my understanding he's simply trying to run a command as root, and not login as root.

comment Shutter is using big memory
@ElijahLynn Every OS does. It's not inefficient as long as developers optimise their applications properly :-)

comment Shutter is using big memory
@ElijahLynn Because when you log into your system, all applications are starting at the same time and using lots of memory. By first letting all the necessary applications like Unity and Nautilus start, and only when those have been started start launching applications like Shutter, the memory usage is divided ~eavenly. Look at it as 5 people who want to get through a door. They can either smash into each other trying to get through the door all at once, or form a line and walk through one by one.

Ok, thanks for the information. I'm going to leave this question open for a few more days, in case a better answer comes along (which I doubt is going to happen).

Yes, it seems like there really is no way to currently do this in Linux.

comment How do I get fan control working?
Only it seems something in the BIOS always sets it back to its previous value after a few seconds :P Anyway, even though it's a bit late, it's still the most helpful answer.

comment Slow for no apparent reason
Thanks for the help, people, but Ubuntu crashed on me yesterday, and I see little reason to try and repair it, as it's more trouble than it's worth in my opinion. Installing a new distro (probably not Ubuntu, I've had it with bugs and slowness for the time being) will fix this problem too, so I'm going to close this question. Thanks again for the help.
