comment Boinc not working
I've found that most projects do not work at all, exiting with computation errors, but on my 12.04 system, the following projects are working: AlmereGrid, Correlizer, Leiden Classical, NFS@home, NRG, and SubsetSum@home. You might consider trying one or more of these until SETI@home works again.

comment Firefox consumes too much memory
You can also open about:memory?verbose in your Firefox address bar to see a detailed tree list of where your memory is being used... I'm not sure if this will help, but you might find that some sites aren't as light as they seem.

comment I can not install or find downloads on my laptop
@user49523 Why would you tell her to reinstall her OS? She just needs to learn how to use it... I don't think Synaptic is installed by default, and it's probably too complicated for a brand new Ubuntu user at any rate.

Installing software on Ubuntu is a little different than what you might be used to if you're a Windows user. Your best bet for installing things is to use the Ubuntu Software Centre.

This was a fresh install of 12.04 beta 1 from a week or so ago, updated last night with Update Manager.

I have no image editor on this machine, but the problem should be self-evident in the screenshot. Thanks for you help.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I guess my question wasn't specific enough. My Installed icons are the ones that are out of order.
