It worked thanks. Don't know why, the system needed a reboot. echo $PATH shows /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbi‌n:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/jre1.7.0_51/bin::/usr/local/jre1.7.0_51/bin:/usr/loc‌al/jre1.7.0_51/bin

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras worked for me. It installed a lot of other stuff, but it gets the job done.

comment How to roll back Ubuntu to a previous version?
I was talking about overwriting the system files only. Re-installation of the OS without formatting the hdd.

comment How to roll back Ubuntu to a previous version?
Is it possible to just overwrite the system files with the desired release? i.e. if I use 12.10 and want to go back to 12.04 or older, without backing up anything, is it possible just to overwrite the system files with fresh installation.
