Its a bit of a guess to why, but i think what the software is doing is grabbing the tags for both cds, and bizzarely, ignoring the discnumber tag

set the second nick as your first alternate nick, naturally. First nick will fail, second nick will connect

I do seem to recall it did so during my testing, i should be no different from if he pinged out and reconnected (where this works)
