comment What path do I need to give to 'dd' when creating a bootable USB stick on Mac OS?
Disk images are dmg/iso/etc... files. You want to input the absolute path of the image. If it's on you desktop, that would be ~/Desktop/ubuntu.iso

I can't answer your question, but was there an issue with streaming to the Chromecast in Chrome? Or you just don't like Chrome?

comment Which Macs will run Ubuntu?
In fact it should work better than rEFIt as rEFInd is more up to date.

comment reduce laptop screen brigtness below minimum
I don't know if that's possible, but what I use is an app called RedShift, which gives the screen a redshit and is much easier on the eyes. If you do give it a try, don't kick it immediately. It takes a while to get used to.

comment Wiped out OSX (Mac Air), to install Ubuntu 13.10 which doesn't boot
I see. Boot that USB, select "Try Ubuntu" when you have the option, and edit the contents of fdisk -l and a snapshot of GParted into your post. Also - if you can, join the general chatroom. Not sure if you have enough reputation to do so.

Don't use 2 driver versions at the same time. Deactivate one before activating the other, then reboot.

How did you go about installing Ubuntu? Did you make a boot partition? What happens when you turn the computer on? Please provide us with more information and we'd be happy to get Ubuntu booting for you :D

Boot into recovery, open up a root shell, and type dpkg --get-selections nvidia-*. What's the output?
