Ubuntu/Linux user since about 2005. I do graphic design and creative work mostly.

I use Ubuntu for work, for play, and for communication. I am absolutely not interested in the technologies underneath it all. In other words, I try to use my computer for doing things, not do things for my computer.

I'm a strong advocate of open source software and the principles behind it.

Current hardware (aka the sources of all the problems that bring me here):

Desktop: Ubuntu 13.10 Gnome Classic, Intel i5, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9600, dual monitor

Laptop: Ubuntu 23.10 Gnome Classic (no effects), Asus Zenbook, i5, 4GB RAM

Media Server: Mythbuntu 12.10, Intel Q4, 4GB RAM

Given the anonymity issue in your other answer, this looks like the way to go. I am currently looking into virtual computer options, and trying to find the easiest to set up.

comment Why is BubbleUPnP not connecting to my minidlna server?
Have flagged to close this question because apparenlty minidlna is no longer available in 14.04, which I am now using. So, I'm no longer in a position to apply any solutions to the question as stated.

Thank you for this response. Can you explain what you mean by "as long as you are not using it for anonymity"? Anonymity is part of the reason I use a VPN, so what kind of anonymity issues are we talking about?

@davidbaumann, apparently they provide a "SOCKS5 Proxy". I have never set up a proxy before, though, and I'm barely aware of what it is. I've seen the option to set up a proxy in programs like Firefox. Are you suggesting I can use a proxy from within the program to access my VPN?

comment How do I get rid of this Anthy toolbar?
This might have worked. After a reboot, I stopped seeing the toolbar on my laptop. Oddly, I started seeing it on my desktop. In any case, I'm going to confirm my settings on both machines and then hopefully come back here to mark this as correct.

comment Why am I getting the Android mount error?
According to lsusb, all my USB ports are USB 2.0. Also, USB tethering is not enabled. I appreciate your help, and you may be right that this error is partly to do with my computer's USB 2.0 connection, but I find it hard to believe there is no way to solve this error without getting a USB 3.0 port.

Isn't that a hardware problem, not a software problem? My computer only has the USB ports that it has, and I don't know if they are USB 3 or 2. Are you saying I am stuck with the error of my USB ports are 2.0?

Unfortunately, I have started getting the error again, so it would seem this is not the complete solution.

Thanks for this information. Sorry, though, I should have mentioned I'm using Gnome-Flashback. I don't seem to have a Setup - Ibus-Anthy anywhere that I can see. I was able to uncheck the options on Menu visibility on Status Icon, but the toolbar is still there.

@Jos, yes, if I connect as USB Mass Storage, it works fine.

@Jos, The option to select USB Storage involves half a dozen steps, which I'm hoping I don't have to do every time I connect the device.

comment Why am I getting the Android mount error?
@AvinashRaj, installed mpt-tools might have solved it. I don't see the errors after installing it, though I'm going to give it a little time to be sure. You could make your comment into an answer.

comment Why am I getting the Android mount error?
@AvinashRaj, it takes about 5 steps to get to mass storage mode. I hope it's not the case that the only solution is to go through that every time I connect my phone.
