Ubuntu/Linux user since about 2005. I do graphic design and creative work mostly.

I use Ubuntu for work, for play, and for communication. I am absolutely not interested in the technologies underneath it all. In other words, I try to use my computer for doing things, not do things for my computer.

I'm a strong advocate of open source software and the principles behind it.

Current hardware (aka the sources of all the problems that bring me here):

Desktop: Ubuntu 13.10 Gnome Classic, Intel i5, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9600, dual monitor

Laptop: Ubuntu 23.10 Gnome Classic (no effects), Asus Zenbook, i5, 4GB RAM

Media Server: Mythbuntu 12.10, Intel Q4, 4GB RAM

comment Is there another option besides MythTV for watching video files with remote control access?
Thank you for this suggestion. XBMC does seem to have the features I want, but it also seems to be as feature rich and as large as MythTV, so I'm not sure if I'm benefitting over using MythTV.

comment Why is BubbleUPnP not connecting to my minidlna server?
Thank you for this information. I am going to make a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 on the computer in question, so when that is complete, I will try your advice and see what happens.

comment Can I have only one program access my VPN?
@Achu, thank you for that link. I had not seen it before. However, now that I am looking at it, it seems to presumes a fair amount of expert knowledge. I'm hoping for more of a laymans explanation.

comment Will I be able to get an interface that is like Gnome Classic in Ubuntu 14.04?
I think Xfce is a fine distribution, but where it falls down for me is that, as far as I know, it aspires for efficiency at the expense of features. What I really want is a feature rich environment, but with a certain look and feel, and Xfce only provides one of those.

Wait... I can use Ubuntu and keep MATE? Seems almost too good to be true... :)
