comment Unable to do ./configure during emacs installation
Is there a special reason you're trying to compile it yourself from source code? Why not install it via Ubuntu's package management system? sudo apt-get install emacs

comment Installing applications from source
Yes, there's also open source software for Windows, Mac etc. Most commercial software is not open source, and you cannot run it on any other operating system than what it was made for. There are things like Wine that can make Windows software run on Linux, but this is limited; not all software works with it.

comment Installing applications from source
Most software is written to work on a specific OS. A program written for Windows does not work on Linux, in fact, even if you have the source code then you can't even compile it to work on Linux, because the functions of the OS are not the same.

"if i want to install application from source this application's people must provide the source code?" - Yes ofcourse, that's what "from source" means! And if it's a commercial program that is not open source, then you don't get the source code.

comment How to install the latest Java OpenJDK version?
@HristoHristov With regard to Java, formerly Sun and now Oracle have always been extremely careful to ensure backwards compatibility. It's not like Python 3 which has clear incompatible changes compared to Python 2.

comment How to install the latest Java OpenJDK version?
@HristoHristov Companies are always very careful to jump onto a new version of anything. If their software works with Java 6 and they don't have a good business reason to go to 7, they stay at 6. And Oracle will continue to support 6 for a while. Upgrading doesn't happen immediately everywhere the day a new version comes out.

@HristoHristov Not completely true. Java 7 is fully backwards compatible with Java 6; anything that works on 6, also works on 7.

comment How to find out root password for installing software
Note that normally there is no good reason to set a password for root. To install Netbeans you certainly do not need to set a password for root! Just use your own password (that you would normally use for sudo).
