Sorry for the delay, Derric, and for posting that self-referential link. I've corrected my answer.

comment Downloading software in Ubuntu
Do you actually want to install all the software that's available for Ubuntu? Like, biochemistry simulators, Koran study tools, penguin sledding simulators, etc? I think you'll need a very big hard drive, but if that's really what you want I can dig up a command.

What were the results of the nmap command run from your client machine? sudo apt-get install nmap && sudo nmap -PN test.test2.example.com

ps works with or without a space between the -p and the pid. If you run kill $! and you get a usage message, then $! is probably not defined. You can check that by echoing it, like echo $! . $! is only defined within the specific terminal from which you have launched another process, so you must run all of the commands I listed in order, in the same terminal session.

What were the results of the nmap command? Also, can you connect to the ftp server from itself. For example, on your server can you use ftp localhost ?

comment What Does Totem's Thumbnailer Do with MP3s?
I don't know, but you could investigate this using strace: sudo apt-get install -y strace then sudo strace -p$(ps -ef |grep 'totem-video-thumbnailer'|grep -v grep|head -1 |awk '{print $2}')

comment What to do when my keyboard sensitivity decreases but returns to normal after re-log
When this problem occurs, can you try switching to a text-only virtual terminal (using ctrl+alt+F1) and seeing if the problem occurs there as well? And then switch back (ctrl+alt+F7) and see if the problem persists? That may provide a useful clue.
