comment How to create a URL link on the Unity desktop
I edited the answer and tried to explain the concept of drag and drop, although I have the suspicion you already knew that. If it still doesn't work for you, maybe you want to report a bug - look there how to do that.

I'm still running Ubuntu 12.04, but I tried it in a VM running 13.04 with Unity, and it still works the same.

comment What's the best way to use parallel bzip2 and gzip by default?
I have been using the symlinks since 2011 now and didn't see any breakage (apart from the case mentioned in the edit). And if such subtle differences are not found and reported, we will be stuck with non-parallel versions forever. If you use TAR_OPTIONS="--use-compress-program=pbzip2" it doesn't seem like you can differentiate between bzip2 and gzip.

comment Infrared usb adapter not hot pluggable?
It's perfectly ok to accept your own answer - you solved the problem, so you deserve the internet points. If you want to automate the process, you can create an udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/.

Thanks for the feedback. I converted my comment to an answer so you can accept it and I get all the nice internet points.

There's a similar question and answer which might apply for your question as well.

comment How migrate my keyring (containing ssh passprases, nautilus remote filesystem, pgp passwords) and network manager connections?
Is the user id of your user on the new drive the same as on the old drive, or did you chown your ~/.gnome2/keyrings/ to the new user so that he can read the files?

comment Intel HD 3000 not working in ubuntu 12.04
The "culprit" here seems to be the Optimus technology. Have a look at this answer, it seems to be a similar problem, albeit on a different laptop.

Did you try to change the output device manually in Sound Settings?

comment GUI time is different than command line time
Is your BIOS clock set to UTC or local time? If it's UTC, /etc/default/rcS should have a line UTC=yes, otherwise UTC=no.

comment static ip issue
I see that nobody asked why you wanted to edit /etc/network/interfaces in the first place, we all assumed that you have to do it. So, do you really need to edit /etc/network/interfaces or did you read a guide that might be outdated? You can certainly use a static IP address with the normal network manager (if you are using a GUI, at least).

I meant the lines (rows of text) in /etc/network/interface. You can disable the lines (for eth1) by putting a "#" at the start of the line. Or you can remove (delete) these lines.

I'm not sure whether you can have eth0 and eth1 in the same network (192.168.1.*) at the same time - if the system wants to reach 192.168.1.1, how can it decide whether it should use eth0 or eth1? Can you please disable/remove the lines for either eth0 or eth1?

You wrote you are "not sure which one my wire is plugged into right now". If you get an address from DHCP on eth0, wouldn't eth0 be the interface which is connected?

comment How to change default scaling governor back to ondemand
It's /etc/default/cpufrequtils on Ubuntu, not /etc/conf.d/cpufreq. And the variables (as seen in /etc/init.d/cpufrequtils) are MAX_SPEED, MIN_SPEED and GOVERNOR.

comment apt-get keeps saying to check Internet, while I have a good connection
Thank you for posting the exact error message, but the obvious question now is: did you check your internet connection and what was the result? You could open a browser and see if your internet connection works.

comment How do I swap mouse buttons to be left handed from the terminal?
It should be permanent if you put it in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. If not, you can put it in Startup Applications or create a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart from the terminal.

sh -c "vlc ~/Music/* -Z" should work, but there is a bug, so quoting doesn't work.

Can you try to install the 32 bit version of Teamviewer? It worked for me.
