comment How to Connecting laptop to LCD TV using HDMI
Your TV might be advertising a mode 1024x768 that it is not able to show. If you try xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080i or xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1280x720, do you get a signal?

Ok, but please show the output of xrandr alone, without any options.

Can you please add the output of xrandr to your question? You should get two displays that are "connected". Try these displays in your xrandr command, e.g. xrandr --output HDMI3 --auto.

comment Controlling Bluetooth mouse gestures that register keyboard events
The definition of the key names is in /usr/include/linux/input.h, which states that the names are modeled after USB HUT 1.12, which says key codes 232-65535 are "Reserved". input-kbd uses the name.sh there to reverse the key name -> code mapping, to enable input_kbd to print names for the key codes.

You can use sudo input-events 4 to see which mouse button is which. KEY_UNKNOWN (hopefully) doesn't print or trigger any action.

What happens if you map all of the KEY_* to 0 or one of the KEY_UNKNOWN values (e.g. 240)? Or does that disable some of the gestures that you want to keep? To generate the new map, you could pipe the current map through awk '/KEY_/ { $3 = 240 } { print }'.

comment How to create a URL link on the Unity desktop
I edited the answer and tried to explain the concept of drag and drop, although I have the suspicion you already knew that. If it still doesn't work for you, maybe you want to report a bug - look there how to do that.

I'm still running Ubuntu 12.04, but I tried it in a VM running 13.04 with Unity, and it still works the same.

comment What's the best way to use parallel bzip2 and gzip by default?
I have been using the symlinks since 2011 now and didn't see any breakage (apart from the case mentioned in the edit). And if such subtle differences are not found and reported, we will be stuck with non-parallel versions forever. If you use TAR_OPTIONS="--use-compress-program=pbzip2" it doesn't seem like you can differentiate between bzip2 and gzip.

comment Infrared usb adapter not hot pluggable?
It's perfectly ok to accept your own answer - you solved the problem, so you deserve the internet points. If you want to automate the process, you can create an udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/.

comment How migrate my keyring (containing ssh passprases, nautilus remote filesystem, pgp passwords) and network manager connections?
Is the user id of your user on the new drive the same as on the old drive, or did you chown your ~/.gnome2/keyrings/ to the new user so that he can read the files?

The "culprit" here seems to be the Optimus technology. Have a look at this answer, it seems to be a similar problem, albeit on a different laptop.

Did you try to change the output device manually in Sound Settings?

comment GUI time is different than command line time
Is your BIOS clock set to UTC or local time? If it's UTC, /etc/default/rcS should have a line UTC=yes, otherwise UTC=no.

comment static ip issue
I see that nobody asked why you wanted to edit /etc/network/interfaces in the first place, we all assumed that you have to do it. So, do you really need to edit /etc/network/interfaces or did you read a guide that might be outdated? You can certainly use a static IP address with the normal network manager (if you are using a GUI, at least).

I meant the lines (rows of text) in /etc/network/interface. You can disable the lines (for eth1) by putting a "#" at the start of the line. Or you can remove (delete) these lines.
