@Eborbob enabling the option means adding it's command line flag to the string of text that gets fed to chrome at startup. So the option itself looks like "--disable-accelerated-2d-canvas" and 'enabling' it just adds this text to the command line.

Assuming you're using regular Ubuntu or Ubuntu Gnome, there is no box at the bottom of the Permissions tab in the file properties, right of text that says 'Execute:' ?

OK, not sure the cause, but I do have a fix. You need to add the xhost command to the .xinitrc file for the user so it runs when you start the session.
