Changing the umask setting from bashrc just for txt files would be easier. But then again: I still doubt any txt file gets execute persmissions after creating it. rw yes. But x? Not from a default installation.

Your are only the admin when you put sudo in front of your command. Otherwise you are a normal user.

You will need to supply us with something to go on: check log files for notices of errors. Also: boot up from the live dvd and do a memory check. Often random crashes are from bad memory.

General idea would be to put "sudo" in front of your command you use to view the contents. Mostlikely you are using another user-id so you are not allowed to view them.
