comment How to install emacs 24.3 on Ubuntu?
We'll probably never know; this asker never logged back on to the site after posting this question back in May. It's also possible that she just thought she needed 24.3 and didn't, and she does say it's her first time using Ubuntu, so she may not have been aware of APT at the time. I was hoping we'd get a response from the asker if the standard, easy way of installing software was presented and didn't meet her needs.

comment What permissions settings will make /var/www accessible without admin?
Wouldn't that be less secure, because a compromised web server process would itself be able to change the files? It seems like the content should be read-only to the web server process.

You used a Makefile without running a command? Can you give us any information about what that means? What windows or applications are open on your screen?

I just downloaded Molloy's sample code, and "make boot.o" works fine. We're going to need to know what command you're running to be able to help (and possibly what commands you ran before that).

comment Dialogue Windows Look Wrong After Upgrade
Do you have a MyBook external hard drive? I know that sounds like a crazy question in this context, but there was a bug in gnome-settings-daemon recently where it would crash because MyBook returned some garbage data suggesting that it had a partially functioning keyboard. The result looked exactly like your screenshots.

comment crontab doesn't save the buffer
I tried this via EDITOR=nano crontab -e, and I'm not able to reproduce the [ Cancelled ] part of your description. I only get that if I run nano independently and try to save without specifying a filename, but with crontab there's a filename. Does the name of the temporary crontab file appear in nano? Should be something like /tmp/crontab.JhOekM/crontab.

comment how to redirect output to a log file without tee? normal redirection is not working
Which application? It might be doing something screwy like writing to /dev/tty directly, but there's no way to know without knowing which program it is.

comment SSH connections dropping after two or so lines
As bizarre as it sounds, this kind of looks like someone decided ircd shouldn't be allowed to log in but couldn't figure out the right way to prevent it, and so they set up a cron job to kill all of that user's processes every 2 seconds instead. However, when I try this, I can only get my bash to print Killed or Hangup instead of exit. Maybe there's something odd in the packaging of whatever IRC daemon you're running?

Steven's suggestions are solid if it's coming from something in the user's environment on the server. To test whether the problem is client-side, see if you can intercept the "exit" command string by bypassing bash completely: ssh -t ircd@straybytes.inchra.net cat
