OK cool, but what is a hypothetical situation when someone would want to use Intel and not NVIDIA, or vice versa?

Thanks for the reply! Could you please tell me why I would ever want to switch between NVIDIA and Intel? And what is bumblebee?

I tried this and I can now boot into my current kernel, but doing so caused a different problem! See above.

comment Computer crashing on startup after updating kernel — login screen flashes on and off
When I boot into the old kernel it works fine. I don't want to boot into the old kernel permanently however, presumably the new one is there for some reason. I'd prefer to fix this problem and have no idea what could be causing it or how to find out.
