comment How install Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu 13.04?
no idea figured it would be fixed by now, you could use saucy's (ubuntu 13.10) kernel, there may be a back-ported kernel available, otherwise there is the mainline kernel

uname -m; i386 = 32bit and x86_64 = 64bit; another command is dpkg --print-architecture

you can set a password before that screen appears, does not protect any data from a live cd/usb though; help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Passwords

comment How to decide on the right Nvidia driver based on the Linux Kernel version?
The 319.17 driver will available in the xswat ppa eventually, the binary from nvidia's site is not for beginners, it has to be reinstalled after a kernel update [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F1] would get you to where you need to be in install there binary blob

comment “sudo service lightdm stop” will go into a blank screen
I assume you want the 319 driver, it will slow up in the xswat ppa soon, atm there is no raring repo there, you can get the beta driver from the xorg edgers ppa (BETA TESTING) if you cant wait sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa;sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade you may need to go into software sources to get the 319 driver

if you add the PPA i linked you can get the latest, only lag a day or 2 behind, stable drivers are in the xswat ppa
