I would highly recommend the use of virtual environments. This solves any conflicting dependency problems. They are very easy to install, and it basically creates a standalone python environment for each virtualenv. That way, you can use version 1 of package X in Project Y, but use version 2 of package X in Project Z, without running into dependency he'll.

You could try to download the original deb packages from: archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool, but you have to know the exact version you require.

comment Package with bad signature got instlaled on second try: how?
I know that, hence my question (I in fact left out all "hits" from all the other (non-google) repositories). It just occurs to me that this is all very coincidental. Like some google employee noticed the problem within the two minutes I looked on Ask Ubuntu, executed apt-key update and tried installing again.

comment Can't run make - gcc: command not found
To check if gcc is in the path, it's better to run 'which gcc'.

@doot777, what kind of files did the zip archive contain? Linux is very different from Windows. Pretty much any file could be the executable, and .exe extensions are not used at all.
