comment Can't run make - gcc: command not found
To check if gcc is in the path, it's better to run 'which gcc'.

comment Unable to upgrade to 14.04
@doot777, what kind of files did the zip archive contain? Linux is very different from Windows. Pretty much any file could be the executable, and .exe extensions are not used at all.

comment is it possible that i deleted my files while trying to delete a symbolic link?
rm -r dir will recursively delete the contents of dir. That is to say, it will loop through dir, delete files, see if there are folder, delete files in those, find folders in subfolders, delete files in those etc. I'm not sure of the exact order of things here.

What exact command did you use? Just rm? rm -rf? Or any other flag?

comment Problem with Project R installation
If one is doing anything bioconductor-related (which by now is a large portion of the R community), one must use the very latest stable R.

the -f flag does something, but is entirely unnecessary when working as root.

comment Why do I need to have superuser permissions to mount share to local mount point?
Well, as you pointed out USB devices can be mounted without any problem by a user, so it is possible in some manner to mount as regular user. Finding out how, that's the issue :-).

Also true. I just looked in the man, and although it does give a semi-solution to, it still requires some superuser access to modify (well, at least once) /etc/fstab. How do I go about mounting somehting without any superuser access whatsoever?

That's not answering WHY this is the default behavior.
