comment Run anacron even when on battery (laptop)
Just edit /etc/default/anacron, and set ANACRON_RUN_ON_BATTERY_POWER to yes. You should never edit files in /usr.

It is probably installed by default. I mentioned it just to make sure.

Tell me the output of sudo ethtool eth0. The command ethtool is in the package ethtool, if not installed.

comment An Ubuntu command bricked my sytem?
@Bill Although he mentioned about the BIOS, he said his computer became unresponsive with the "Windows setup USB" and the "Windows XP disc", so this could still be the problem.

Yes, you're right, sorry! I didn't pay attention to the LiveCD you mentioned.

Many files are not supposed to be saved because they are not real files, but rather pseudo-files. You may want want to save caches, but don't save the contents of /proc, /dev, sys. Their contents are created on boot.

comment OOM killer not working?
@skerit This I don't really know, but it was set to 0 in the kernels I used back in 2010 (Debian, Liquorix and GRML).

It's clear from his question that he may write an improper script that eats more than it should (and I have already done this myself). In a situation like this, you can watch the script grabbing gigabytes of RAM in a few seconds, and zRAM won't come to the rescue, since the script will never be satisfied enough.

In theory, zRAM is a nice thing, but it is CPU hungry, and generally not worth the cost. Memory is generally way cheaper than electricity. And, on a laptop, where upgrading the RAM is more expensive, CPU usage is mostly undesirable.

I wasn't the one who downvoted you, but generally, lowering vm.swappiness does more harm than good, even more on systems suffering from low memory issues.

@Salem please try echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/oom_kill_allocating_task without a mounted swap. It will be undone after a reboot.
