Thanks for the programmatic approach, that's exactly what I was looking for.

comment want to load ubuntu os on my desktop
Please describe with more detail what you mean by "downloaded from the ubuntu website on to my pendrive". Did you follow these steps: ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows ? Just putting the iso image in a pendrive will not let you install it.

Downvoted because the phrasing is poor. I think there is a valid question here, please phrase it like a question in the title and that might make it useful for someone else.

comment How can I set up aptitude-curses so that it doesn't automatically select *recommended* packages?
Thank you, I guess this under the hood modifies the apt.conf file. I wish I could accept two answers, I'm accepting @izx 's one because it is more comprehensive.

I am ashamed to admit that the per invocation method suits me better. Ashamed because it was in the manpage :). I really appreciate the permanent method, though, I'll see if most of the time I use it without recommends and might just set it permanently if that is the case.

The gconf option is exactly what I was looking for, however your configuration was turning the caps lock into an escape key and the escape key into a tab key. I changed the setting manually again and took a look at the value in gconf-editor, it was actually [caps<tab>caps:swapescape]. Everything works now, I'm accepting your answer and suggest that you edit it to change the value for future reference. Thanks.

Be careful, though, once you get used to having them swapped, it gets awkward when you have to work on anybody else's keyboard :)
