comment Booting a Live USB ISO as an Alternate OS
Just FYI (in case someone comes along who has an answer to this) I wanted to do a live system as opposed to a dual boot so that the linux system would be refreshed to a pristine state at every boot. I figured that way no amount on mucking on the part of the niece would make the system unusable.

comment Seperate /home on Virtual Installation
coteyr has given a helpful comparison of the advantages of using a second mapped partition instead of a virtual one. The question that still remains is what would happen if I installed Linux with the system on a mapped partition and /home on a virtual partition and then tried to boot into it directly.

Thanks for the response. This is what I was planning to do if I couldn't get anything else figured out. However, since I do all of my backups in Windows, trying to back up the files on this partition would be more work then if it was all contained in a vdi file.

comment Early Install - 13.04 vs 12.10
I posted this above but Eliah Kagan suggested I re-post it here. Since updating / upgrading always leaves traces of the old version behind, any thoughts on whether upgrading 12.10 or updating a pre-release 13.04 would result in a cleaner full 13.10 system in the end?
