comment No Sound with a N10/ICH 7 audio controller
The sound settings window has a tab where you can choose default output. Also keep an eye out for mute buttons (and in particular, unchecking mute buttons).

comment I don't like the “new desktop” provided by 11.10. How do I get the old one back?
You can simply do (1) sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop (2) log out, (3) select Xubuntu session from the gear on the login screen, (4) tweak your desktop to resemble the "old" (gnome2). Edit: A warning: installing xubuntu-desktop will add an ugly (at least to me) loading screen when your computer is booting up.

comment How can I make everything just assume I'm running as the superuser?
But if you still want to run specific applications as root, see wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo

Do not do this. It will break your system (apart from exposing your machine to attacks). Read unix.stackexchange.com/questions/1052/…

comment How can I merge the different keyboard indicators?
Right, it's annoying to have a separate icon for Japanese (ibus) and for two other Western languages (keyboard layout indicator, whatever).

comment How can I type Japanese characters?
In 11.04+ is there any way to consolidate the ibus keyboard layout icon with the regular layout selector icon?

comment how to keep nautilus or another program in memory to run more fast?
I don't think this is what Samuel meant. If you turn on nautilus once, you'll notice an improvement in startup speed. He wants it to always happen.

Isn't this a little off-topic?

comment What are the alternatives to OS X's Spotlight?
Aside from the beagle indexing dependency problem explained by @andrewsomething, this app is only a gnome panel widget. This means that the package provides no executable or a way to integrate with the Unity panel!

comment How can I highlight PDFs?
Okular stores annotations and highlights outside of the edited document (it seems to be a Poppler limitation!) okular.kde.org/faq.php#addedannotationsinpdf This means that changes are only visible from Okular, on the machine they were created.

comment How can I highlight PDFs?
+1: This is, so far, the only good option. It works great in Wine, mod some Unity-specific bugs that are getting fixed, and supports a wide collection of document markup options.

comment How can I highlight PDFs?
While Mendelay has a nice interface, the annotation abilities are limited (can only add sticky notes; no drawing or text boxes), and annotations and highlighting aren't saved in the document.

comment How can I highlight PDFs?
xournal only saves the highlights in a xournal-specific format (basically converts the PDF to images, and highlights there)

comment What Custom Launchers and Unity Quicklists are available?
This script also works for Thunar. Just replace on top nautilus-home.desktop with Thunar.desktop and all the way down gksudo nautilus by gksudo thunar
