The Python solution may actually be better than apcalc in that you can import additional libraries, and it supports literal pi and e. I feel putting this as a separate script is more flexible and portable. Here is a simple gist for it: gist.github.com/jasongeng/279eb396c01e74beb9ef

Actually you use calc help builtin to see a list of supported functions like sin()
