Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know. - Daniel J Boorstin

On my day job I maintain a large database application for a growing Edinburgh-based travel search company. Every day I learn more about development and administration in the trenches, including how to cope with legacy worst practices and how to benefit from SQL Server best practices.

Studying part-time at Dundee University for an MSc in Business Intelligence.

Vino doesn't start automatically on XFCE. I raised a bug and explained a fix here: bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=727473

Was the guide really complete? I don't appear to have a running VNC server after following all the steps. I see "connecting to 127.0.0.1:5900 error - problem connecting" when I try to connect using freerdp.

Something changed the owner of .Xauthority to root while I was playing with xrdp, xfreerdp, and vino. Thanks for listing your steps!

comment No wireless with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 7260
I'm running 12.04 LTS because LTS seemed to have better "support" (longer anyway). Guess I need to use the latest and greatest to get good support for new hardware! Thanks for your help.

Is there a way to update the driver automatically using this method? Just noticed that there are more recent kernel versions available (up to 3.13.2).

I didnt't write the comment above; I flagged the question. It's a duplicate all right, and the already accepted answer solved my problem.

comment How to install PostgreSQL on Ubuntu 13.04?
Don't expect an official package for non-LTS Raring. From the PG wiki: "We chose to support only the LTS (long term support) releases of Ubuntu because otherwise we'd need to support too many distributions in parallel. Generally, you can use the packages from the LTS release that predates your release, i.e. on raring (13.04), you would use precise-pgdg (12.04)."

comment xubuntu 12.10 window tiling shortcuts
If you miss Windows-style tiling, double click 'Tile window to the left' and press SUPER + left, then double click 'Tile window to the right' and press SUPER + right. SUPER is sometimes called WIN by Windows users.

To enable tiling by mouse, I went to Applications, Settings Manager, Window Manager, Advanced, then unchecked 'Wrap workspaces when dragging a window off the screen'.

comment What does “ldconfig deferred processing now taking place” mean?
Agreeing with InkBlend - I search Google without even looking at man pages because they only make sense to people who already understand how Linux works. What is a linker?
