I am a Physics PhD student at the university of Nottingham, specialising in atomic force microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy. Scientifically I am interested in instrumentation and accurate measurements of nano-scale forces. I also have a keen interest interest in outreach.

comment ata* problem! also dvd rom is not detected
Its best to remove the problem than mask it by disabling the messages. I had these errors for a while, also ata3 which was the DVD. The computer ran fine for about 6 months and I ignored it. After a while the PC got slow. I think the ata controller was messing up writing to the HDD because of it resetting when it got DVD errors. I had to sort out some corrupt files, but everything has been ok since. So probably best to get the drive out now just in case.

Look here to change boot mode, if you are not confident with these instructions then I would probably ask a new question on this message. As I said before I am not confident on giving advice for EFI.

Good luck with that. I have never had (or been asked to help on) a machine with UEFI, so I have no advice. But there is plenty on the net. When you get boot-repair going remember to write down the paste-bin link just in case there is a problem!

NO! It is almost definitely salvageable! That is a last last resort!

I would try boot-repair. It is the second answer in the question you link to. Do NOT run the grub2-install command below!
