Uninstall Caribou? autostart is a directory for me. I used: cd /etc/xdg/autostart; sudo gedit caribou*; ... and changed "true" to "false" in that file. |

Using tar for simple back-up and restore Two answers so far, and they are kindly worded for the newbie! Thanks! |

Using tar for simple back-up and restore I made a small start in rsync -- actually grsync -- a few months ago. I will take a fresh look. I can't recall why I didn't adopt it at the time, but sometimes I merely run out of energy and time, and the trail goes cold. :-) |

Using tar for simple back-up and restore Thanks for the info. It's about policy and I'm still in building blocks. Seriously, my next stop is figuring out "cron" or anything that lets me HAVE a variable. (Or looking into "dump".) |

Will there be data loss for upgrade? Of course I have extra reason to expect difficulty -- I use a nVidia graphics card. Sure enough, that seems to be affecting things today -- just search on "meerkat nvidia". I see monotasker has given good advice along these lines. |

Problem on boot - Login screen freezes I can't tell you how to get to a working login. But I can tell you that I learned a year ago to immediately run this after install: "sudo apt-get purge gnome-power-manager". I'm pretty sure it's my nVidia card that won't play. |

Will there be data loss for upgrade? Jorge, what do you mean by a clean install over existing install? To me a clean install means a full install, which means a reformat. |

Email application for the computer-impaired Thunderbird it is. Fast. The GUI isn't perfection, in terms of 'transparency', but it's a good sight better than Evolution IMO. While I am not sure my household member would credit TB directly, this week he had a lot more fun with email than any time I recall previously. |

Symlinks and their paths are confusing - how can they be used effectively? Thanks, helpful answer. I have looked at the wikipedia article before, but I think it seemed too techie (as well as others I found) -- today it seemed to get more clear as I pressed on. |

Email application for the computer-impaired @ maco -- thanks for clary. This approach depends on my guy liking a browser well enough; and over the last year, there has been improvement there. So maybe ... |

Email application for the computer-impaired Thanks. I will take a fresh look at TB. I found that Windows Live is Hotmail, and this prompted me to add 'uncluttered' to my specifications. Rotating ads are out. I suppose I could become a subscriber, pay a bit of money to remove ads (assuming one can do that). I have yet to do that but maybe I should consider it. |

Switch user fails to complete successfully There are 20 logs with today's datestamp -- Xorg.n.log, auth.log, boot.log, daemon.log, debug, etc. so far I don't see useful-looking information. Let me know of any more specific places to look. I will try to replicate the problem and scan these files right afterward. |

Email application for the computer-impaired It looks interesting. Can you say a bit about why it would work well for this need? |

Email application for the computer-impaired Old-school plain HTML webmail applications: Not sure about that; I am seeking minimalism, but that suggests regression. Perhaps you can speak to that and also recommend a specific app? And I may check into Modest, but it seems to focus on compactness which again is perhaps not quite on the mark. |
