comment Cannot update google-chrome-stable with apt, even using dist-upgrade
Might seem a trivial question, but just to make sure - are you running apt-get update before you run apt-get upgrade?

The PC beep is pretty odd too. How old is the laptop? Does the battery itself still work / is the capacity strongly reduced? (my HP laptop for example warns me on boot that the charging capacity is below 15% of the design amount, but a continual PC beep is a rather extreme way of doing this) To check the capacity click the battery icon at the top-right in Ubuntu and click on the topmost option ("Battery"), should have "Energy when full" (this is the current max) and "Energy (design)" (what it would have had when new)

This sounds really odd. My first instinct: perhaps there's a short in the keyboard, which means 4 and 5 are sending f5? To test this: Open a terminal, type the command alsamixer and press 4 or 5. If I'm wrong, then it will set the current bar to 40 (or 50)%. If there is a cross-contact though, it will open the "All" view instead of playback (only thing I can think of outside a browser that uses F5 off the top of my head, but should be sufficient to test)

Works like a charm. @EdPaton-Williams: If it worked for you, please consider marking it as an accepted answer by clicking the checkmark to the left.

comment Expanding environment variables in Nautilus
@Gunnar Thanks for the remark - indeed, this difference was the reason why I moved the definition from .bashrc to profile.d in the first place. Trying it in a shell was just a way of making sure it was still being sourced properly (and in fact, the kate editor manages to expand it as well when started from the graphical interface, so it's certainly worked)

@chronitis intriguing idea, hadn't thought of that. The daily scheduling would work (I do use a terminal almost every time I log in, but once per day would be preferable). cron is one of those things that I can't remember ever having used, though. How would I go about doing this?

comment Unable to mount External Memory - Help!
Possibly a silly question on my side, but have you already tried running chkdsk /f from Windows as the error message suggests? It's worth a try just to see if it's purely errors on the disk stopping it, or something else.

Could you upload a screenshot of how the disk looks in gparted? In particular, make sure that your swap partition is still larger than your total RAM.

comment LibreOffice constantly crashing under 13.10
I fixed this in the end by just installing 4.2.0.4 from the deb file on the Libreoffice website. So, pretty much "no repro". Still no idea what went wrong, but it's unlikely to be of much help in future.
