comment Where are commands `fg`, `bg` and `jobs` installed?
@user136104 The reason why something like echo or kill can exist as both commands and builtins and most of the other builtins aren't is because they cannot function without being part of the shell. What exactly would an external bg do? It doesn't know what process to continue, and it can't control its interaction with the terminal.

comment How to use grep output as a path for cd?
No, it's not guaranteed, in theory a shell could use a named fifo or temp file, though there's no reason to.

Of course, if you want to get technical, the shell uses a pipe internally to read the command output.

comment bash: /home/…/program: cannot execute binary file
@BartoszOlszewski "AMD-64" refers to the architecture used on modern 64-bit processors made by both Intel and AMD, because it was used by AMD first (Intel had a rival 64-bit architecture called Itanium).

comment In which directories can “nobody” user write?
@muru IIRC this means anyone can create files in the directory, and can open files that they know exist, but cannot list the contents.

shouldn't this be -perm -002? That way you aren't checking everyone to have every permission, just world-write permission

comment Any command line calculator for Ubuntu?
Wait, what exactly do you mean "switch to" python? and "without any extra prefixes"? Are you saying you want to be able to calculate things at the prompt without running a command?

comment Why can't I import “pygtk” with Python 3.2 from PyDev?
I misread someting about PyGObject - it's confusing that there are announcements about that on the PyGTK website: > PyGobject 2.26.0 has been released. This is the first stable release in the 2.26.x series and introduces initial support for introspection and Python 3. As usual, sources can be fetched from here. Check out the release announcement and full list of changes.

"a version of PyGTK for Python 3 was never written." - that's not what the pygtk website says - do you mean was never packaged for ubuntu?

comment Is it really possible to run Linux applications within Windows using Wubi?
You could also use current versions xubuntu or lubuntu, which haven't caught the unity bug yet.

comment Why does this 'kill' command log me out of the computer?
@user606723 the init process will not exit, and can decide what (if anything) to do about all the other processes having exited.
