Just FYI: if ping 8.8.8.8 (for example) doesn't work, you have a network problem with the player and upgrading won't help you. kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/…

comment Parport scanners
Good Luck! I have an OLD laptop in a closet with a par port, and I haven't even seen that in like a year. I know you just want to get it working, but places like thrift shops often have them for like $3-4 (assuming you're in the US) Just be sure to check online for drivers before purchase.

If your computer came with windows and you still have the COA (the sticker with the reg code) you can just install virtualbox and windows inside of that.

Mabey a BIOS setting? Or the cheapest card on craigslist you can find. Shouldn't matter since you just need it for POST.

Can't you remove it? I looked at the manual on the dell site and it looks like it is on an add-on card as opposed to built-in to the motherboard.

comment Don't let anyone to ssh on my PC
If you need to have ssh, you could always 1) change the port of ssh 2) install knockd 3) change your password and don't give it out.

comment HELP! I need to uninstall Ubuntu from single boot
Your bios has nothing to do with ubuntu. You might have better luck using a friends computer, and downloading the USB boot creation tool, then getting an iso from the internet, then using the tool. Boot from that.

If you ping 8.8.8.8 do you get a response? (ping times) When you say you can connect by ethernet, do you mean you can browse like normal?

You can always try, but things that are overwritten are going to be hard to recover.

comment Problems with Testdisk recovery
Go to a terminal and type sudo apt-get install testdisk If you deleted your partitions and overwrote them, you are pretty much toast. Your only option is to contact the NSA and ask them for a copy of all your data.

comment Will using a less resource intensive DE on top of Ubuntu be as fast as a distro which uses that DE as default?
You can just add all xubuntu stuff with sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop lubuntu sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop. When you reach the login screen, you will be able to choose which DE you want.
