I've never tried to use VNC as a second display, simply a mirror of the first, headless one.

Mabey something along the lines of using VNC on the phone to link to the Ubuntu box, but it would just be VNC attached to your head. not a poor mans-VR.

comment 12TB storage, can someone help me? :)
Look very closely at a zfs solution with a smallish (128-256GiB) ssd for a scratch drive. Just be warned..ZFS loves ram but can be very fast.

Since you don't know what you installed and were thus unable to list anything, I told you how to get back to a known state.

comment There are no OS options in Dell Recovery.
have you tried to switch terminals with ctl-alt-f2 ? if you can, you might be able to use parted to det the bootable blag. Or if worst comes to worst, make a ubuntu server usb, boot it and change the flag there, then try to install ubuntu.

Just found this, nomodeselect seems to be the key. If it works, let me know and I'll write it as an answer so you can accept it. ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2262404

Are you using a 64bit Ubuntu on a 3 bit machine? If you have UEFI, did you change it in bios to turn off secure boot? How did you boot the time you managed to use gparted?

Nice answer. Oddly enough I have intermittent problems with both programs on multiple machines. No rhyme or reason to it.

If that was the problem, it'll just work. Lots of mp3 players and phones don't get recognized as a "drive" and need this.

That and the nvidia 6100 is going to want drivers that are not around anymore. I have used both Xubuntu and lubuntu and like it alot. Just keep an eye out for more ram, I just priced your ram and it is like 15$ (US) 1GB.
