comment Inexpensive way to get Ubuntu LTS with 100% certainty that it has not been compromised
Even though it is unlikely for an iso to get 'infected' when downloaded from a safe site like ubuntu.com, you can buy one from osdisc.com if you want to... But then how do you know THEY are not 'infected'?

comment Is there easy and safe way to resize /boot
I would try edwin's suggestion first, your other option is to use a boot USB and gparted to resize /boot.

comment Trying to connection to a windows VPN
This is kinda unrelated, but a really good/free/easy VPN solution is hamachi at www.logmein.com. there is even a front end for ubuntu called haguichi with a ppa at www.webupd8.org Sometimes you just want it working now.

comment Migrating to a different distro, but keeping files
Pretty much, at least it is easier. Just be careful when you install. For example, installing ubuntu you would not select the "install ubuntu along side xxx" or whatever, but go to the "something else" selection instead, give / the partition you are sacrificing and format it, and give /home your home directory WITHOUT formating it.... Bear in mind that this is no replacement for backing stuff up.

comment How do I get an SD card reader to work in Ubuntu 13.04?
I know this dosen't help, but I've had the same problems on numerous netbooks/laptops. The problem is that it dosen't show up as a standard ide device, so drivers must be written for specific implementations. I just ended up giving up and buying a $2 sd card reader from amazon.
