I am a programmer and open source software enthusiast from West Tennessee. Before 2007, I knew very little about open source software. I tinkered around with freeware and shareware, but always on Windows. Since reading about Ubuntu Linux in a PCWorld article, I have learned how to use open source software such as The GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender; how to program in Python; and how to design websites with WordPress. I have become active in the Ubuntu community, answering questions on Ubuntu Forums, reporting bugs on Launchpad, and testing pre-release versions of Ubuntu.
I am a developer for Keryx, a free/open source software project intended to help Ubuntu users with slow or no Internet connection install software.

“The following packages have been kept back:” Why and how do I solve it? Cas, should I just add that it could be dangerous to run a dist-upgrade on a stable system? Why exactly is that dangerous? (I honestly don't know apt all that well.) |

Empathy “Authentication failed” when connecting to Freenode Mrokii, the problem just disappeared. 0_o I'm now able to connect to Freenode, and I don't know of anything I changed. But thank you for your help! |

Why does DVD playback still not work after installing libdvdcss2? Region codes could have something to do with it... I'll investigate that further. It's probably not the player. I've tried Totem and VLC. VLC doesn't throw an error: it just croaks. The command-line errors just spew "failed to decrypt" messages. I guess the final thing could be the optical drive... but what are the odds of that? I'll find out when I install XP in a Virtualbox later this week. |

Empathy “Authentication failed” when connecting to Freenode Mrokii, I changed the username to something unique, but still had the same problem. I'm beginning to suspect my ISP. Please see the edit to my question. Thanks! |

Why does DVD playback still not work after installing libdvdcss2? I removed the three packages (which also removed quite a few dependencies), then reinstalled them. But I'm still getting the same error. I also tried using dpkg-reconfigure on the packages. |

Why does DVD playback still not work after installing libdvdcss2? Should I remove the three packages first? If so, I'll give it a try tomorrow when I have an unlimited internet connection. |
