comment where is the xorg.conf file in kubuntu 11.10?
There might not be such a file, you need to create it from scratch. Try sudo updatedb and then locate xorg.conf.

comment How do I make the clock stop chiming every hour on the hour?
I think gnome shell does not use gconf any more. Maybe you find something in the ~/.local dir.

comment How to replace OpenJDK 6 with OpenJDK 7?
Somebody would have to build that into a Debian package and put it into a PPA on Launchpad. If nobody did that yet, you can either make a .deb or install the tar.

comment Will Unity 2D continue using metacity or will it use compiz?
That does not make too much sense since the -2D variant is for non-3D computers. Compiz is usually used as a compositor, not as a WM. I do not see the point in using Compiz as a non-compositing WM.

comment How can I record Skype conversations?
If you want it in the BG, you could reroute the audio devices. So that a "sniffer" records from audio in and provides this as a virtual device. On the Mac, there is Soundflower, I do not know anything for Linux though.
