It might be possible to use ACPI hooks. With thinkpad-scripts, we do the same thing. See for example the rotation hook.

Depends on the makefile. My makefiles do not have any of this, but my programs are mostly scripts, not compiled programs. The operating system is just a bunch of packages, so there is nothing special about them, really. Coreutils are just C programs, that get compiled.

I assume that the software is just build with the makefiles of the software, therefore the build flags depend on the packages.

Having to xorg.conf is normal nowadays since the configuration is automatic. I tried that xrandr command and did not see any difference, though.
