Do you need to reboot for this to take effect?

This should not be marked as a duplicate. The other question doesn't target this specific problem.

comment What is the difference between “Redirection” and “Pipe”?
Is it accurate to say that "thing1 > temp_file" is merely syntactic sugar for "thing1 | tee temp_file" ? Since finding out about tee I almost never use redirects.

Unfortunately this doesn't work over ssh even if X11 is enabled.

comment Execute script when disk space is low
Oh, I didn't know logrotate was actually a a command. I thought that was implemented in the application logic. That's the closest thing to what I'm looking for so I'm marking this correct for now. Though still, if anyone has another solution that can invoke a script on low disk space to clean up specific directories that only me the user knows about that would be even better.

I have the same issue but this didn't work for me. I think I changed my display manager from gdm to lightgdm which seems to have broken something.
