comment After installing fglrx on Ubuntu 14.04 there is no backlight (hd 5470). Is there any workaround?
Let's wait for comments. Anyway, thanks for that hint. I've completely forgotten about it.

These kernel parameters (plus acpi_osi=linux) helpded me to get backlight keys working on a new laptop running opensuse 13.1. The problem is, that the screen is completely off after reboot with fglrx installed. Shady image with just backlight off appears when you boot into rescue mode and select the failsafe graphics option. (I have the same laptop model and the same problem)

Note: the same situation with 12.04 (I tried to reinstall 14.04 with 12.04, but all of the drivers available on ATI website (even the 12.1) ended with the same result.

Same problem here (Mobility HD5470). By default, opensource driver is being used, which is surprisignly OK with Steam games. What made me angry was the Blackberry simulator, which requires fglrx to run in normal mode. Anyway, thanks for this answer, I'm going to try the legacy ppa and let you know about the result.

Find a program called "software and updates" (don't remeber the exact name). Besides other things, it provides a tool to manage repositories.

This might be THE reason; particulary the HP recovery partition, which is bootable. I don't remeber all the installer options exactly. I always do my own setup, to make sure the installer does'n destroy existing partitions.

So, that's it - 404 Not Found, try to paste the url into browser. It's invalid. Remove the repo and find a working one.
