comment Why can't I set group and ownership of one folder without afffecting the other?
That worked, got some errors on a few odd files though: chown: cannot dereference /home/htpc/.mozilla/firefox/hsvz7dcl.default/lock: No such file or directory chown: cannot access /home/james/.gvfs: Permission denied Some others, but they're all cannot derefence

comment Using avconv, when remuxing to MKV, is there a way to fix packed AVI input files?
Thanks, I shall try it out this evening. I wonder if there is a command that acts like a buffer? Waits for the command writing to stdin to complete before passing it all to stdout. With seek on stdout. That would be handy. avconv -i xxx | buf | avconv -i stdin xxx

comment Can I set the MTU to be 9000 for everything on my network except the internet router?
Yeah, supposed to, but BT puts a gigabit port on their switch which defaults to 1500 and can't be configured... ¬.¬

comment How do I set a network bridge to have an MTU of 9000?
However I did manage to solve it last night, using almost exactly this solution. I added: post-up ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000 at the end of the br0 section, twice, both for eth0 and eth1.

The bridge itself just seems to take the smallest MTU from it's set of hosted devices and uses that. MTU on br0 in the interfaces file causes the networking to fail to start on boot.
