comment How do I know what files are executed when I open an application?
@Michael it spawns a shell because it uses a pipe ("|") which is shell syntax. You can set up the same pipe manually from code but it is much easier to let a shell do it - as long as you know there's no chance of shell escape codes being passed through from the user, which can lead to security vulnerabilities.

comment How can I temporarily suspend Nautilus filesystem automounting, without making permanent changes to the system and user configuration?
That was a rhetorical question: the state won't be restored unless the user runs some piece of software to restore it, which they might not do.

How will the state be restored?

Restoring the setting at the next run is not an option because the user might never decide to run my program again.

That doesn't really help unfortunately. In the case where the computer crashes it does not matter how many watchdog programs are running. Changing fstab is a permanent change, and I don't know the label of the drive before I plug it in.

I added some detail to the answer. MTU=1 means you send a whole packet for every byte of data transmitted. Each packet has a 8 byte header so you're losing nearly 90% of your bandwidth on packet headers this way.

MTU at 1 is much much too low. Try 400, 800 etc. Increase until it stops working.
