comment How to send mail from the command line?
Don't install ssmtp on a server with postfix installed. Postfix will be removed. Instead, just use sendmail user@example.com < file.txt which will work with either postfix or ssmtp.

comment Virtual USB bus using TCP
Further to my comments below - I see from your other question this is a WNDR4500. I have a DGND3700 which is quite different, but some things are the same. You might get some answers if you enable the telnet console on this device and poke around in the system, though this is quite advanced stuff, and you can break it if you're not careful.

I just tried the instructions given above. No only did it not work, it also hard locked my machine a couple of seconds later.

And yes, looks like that bug may affect you.

With regards 'proprietary protocols' - I would say it is unlikely. Many of the high-end routers which have features like this run Linux inside so there is a good chance it uses usbip. Telling us the make of router might help.

LANG=es_ES <command> doesn't actually work if you don't have that locale installed, but this is the confirmation I was looking for. LANG=C <command> gives the built-in strings always.

comment Volume keys are working in unity but not in xfce4
This won't work in 12.10 because xfce4-mixer isn't installed by default and so those settings won't exist. See my answer below for how to create them.

comment Indicator applet in MATE
It's worth mentioning that only indicator-sound-gtk2 and indicator-application-gtk2 exist in 12.10; the others are not available under MATE or XFCE desktops.

comment Why the poor graphics from my Intel VGA over Thunderbolt/Displayport?
Something that just occured to me: have you checked the colour settings on your monitor? I have the U2410 and it has colour settings per input, ie the HDMI can be configured separately from the display port connector (no thunderbolt on this model though.) It also has a large number of settings including basic brightness/contrast, colour temp, and independent gain control for each channel. Apparent low colour depth could be caused by having the brightness too low and the contrast too high, or maybe the other settings are just messed up.

I think your best bet is to report it as a bug on bugs.freedesktop.org under the intel driver. Taking a photo of the screen will probably help diagnose, and of course include everything you've posted here. This should "just work" so even if you find a workaround it still needs fixing.

This is a tricky one. It's not a software problem if screenshots look Ok. It has to be a driver bug, so not something you can easily fix.
