I've worked in SAS research and development since joining SAS in 1989. My current position is Principal API Architect, where I work on our (REST) API strategy, standards, processes, tools, and development. My interests include concurrent programming, the art and practice of making software better, stronger, faster, collaboration, MediaWiki, and on and on, and even rarely blog about same. I hack in GNU Emacs (constantly), MediaWiki (daily), Eclipse (from time to time).

comment How to restore proper notification handling with gnome-session, Openbox, Cairo-dock?
but zenity --notification used to work for me as described - I got nonintrusive notifications, not dialogs. I have multiple scripts that call it.

comment Command to unmute and maximize volume?
Thanks. The commands in other answers, such as 'amixer -c 0 set Master playback 100% unmute' or 'amixer set Master unmute' did not work for me (even if I mute via 'amixer set Master mute').

comment How can I switch user in a shell and use the existing gnome display session?
Thanks, @RiccardoMurri - I left out something. From my desktop, I ssh -X somehost to login as myself and X works. From there, I want to sudo and have that command use my desktop display. But after doing ssh -X, the remote shell has DISPLAY set to a local proxy (localhost:10.0 for example) and this can't be passed to sudu (or other su userid commands). The pipeline above fails because localhost is not known to xauth. But this works: [[ xauth nextract - ${DISPLAY/localhost/$(hostname)/unix} | sudo xauth nmerge - ]] followed by sudo xcommand . I must change localhost to $(hostname)/unix for xauth

From my desktop running xubuntu, I run ssh -X otherhost. From that host, DISPLAY is "localhost:10.0". When I try xauth extract - $DISPLAY I get an error, No matches found, authority file "-" not written

That link appears to be dead (404) but a 13.04 version exists at help.ubuntu.com/13.04/ubuntu-help/session-screenlocks.html

comment How to automount a gvfs file system on logon
You can put the credentials in a separate file that only root can read (often non root users can read /etc/fstab and thus see userid/passwords stored there). Use credentials=/root/remove_server.credentials where that file has two lines in it, username=userid password=userids-password

comment I can't add a Indicator Applet to Panel in Gnome-Classic
Thanks, great answer that worked like a charm on my Ubuntu 11.10 system. (The Ubuntu documentation seriously needs some updating with information like this - i.e. how to migrate to the new world and discuss all the "features" that used to be there but are no longer there "out of the box".)

comment How to use GNOME3 with Compiz
where is compiz-config ? It is not on my 11.10 system; apt-get does not know about it. I do have Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm) - is that what you mean?
