comment Will Ubuntu run on my laptop?
The push for 64 bit architecture came out of the need to address huge amounts of memory on big data servers. It comes at a price though: system-wide memory bloat. If you can afford to have all your applications take up between 1.5 to 2 times as much memory, then yes, you will benefit from x64. As for who's taking it personally, citing opinions instead of facts it's pretty clear.

comment Gnome keyboard accelerators / keys in Ubuntu Trusty 14.04
Try booting from the 14.04 live usb (without installing) and see if you can replicate the issue. If you can't then this means it was caused by the upgrade process, and a fresh install will make it go away.

The first thing to check is what's happening to memory. What's the output of top at the beginning and later when it happens ? (the first 4 lines)

I know how it feels, upgrading is great when it works but I've hit too many mysterious issues like this which get triggered by the upgrade process, and then you're stuck. Now I go with fresh installs and migrate the settings I care about: takes a little time upfront, but clean system and no bad surprises guaranteed...

Get the 32bit version. With 3Gb of ram there's no point using the 64bit version, it will use up a lot more memory.

comment Is there any open-source way to make a static from a dynamic executable with no source code availability?
Yeah, a pity. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a 64bit issue, try running statifier on a 32bit setup maybe ?

Have a look at How to find (and delete) duplicate files. fslint and dupedit in particular should be very efficient.
