comment What is PPA and why do people use it for Nvidia graphics?
Well, you may have to select to enable the proprietary driver but theoretically yes.

The preferred mechanism for installing the driver is the PPA. When you use the manual Nvidia driver, you can't easily remove it in future or update it automatically. It should also then show up in the types of integration that you are discussing ("additional drivers" etc).

comment Can I perform a distribution upgrade without rebooting?
Hi, just tried this: sudo service dbus restart, which shutdown X, but then did not bring it back up... any idea?

Just attempted to test this under VirtualBox. Sadly, during the distribution upgrade process the guest OS froze and, on hard reset, the root FS was corrupted.

comment Why is my Ubuntu 10.10 CD not booting?
Apologies, I didn't see that. Can you get a different machine to boot this CD? Also, if I'm reading this correctly, your Windows XP CD has exactly the same problem?

Many thanks! If someone could confirm this, I'll mark as accepted as I have no way of testing myself until a dist upgrade is available.
